Title: RE: About Firewall comparison

Don;

        The basis of Firewall security testing in the February 1999, Small Business/Home Office Computing review consisted of a simple port scan against a packet filter and if the proxy passed data then the proxy passed the test.... The listed criteria for this review was Value $$, Performance (as in speed only), Ease of Use and Suitability for Home Office Use.... Not a word about security?? With respect to the old outdated LAN Times review from last year.... a much more current review can be found by SC Magazine at http://www.infosecnews.com/ it was just last months issue. While it does not cover your employer - Elron Firewall it does cover many other Firewalls: BIGfire Firewall, BorderWare Firewall Server 6.0, CommandView Firewall for NT 2.5, ConSeal PC Firewall 1.3, CyberGuard Firewall for Windows NT 4.1, FireWall-1 4.0, Gauntlet for NT 5.0, GNAT Box Firewall 2.2, Interceptor 3.6, NetScreen 1.5, Raptor Firewall 6.0, SideWinder 4.0, WatchGuard LiveSecurity System

        You really need to consider the source of some of these reviews. I would hate to think someone made a security decision on a Firewall based upon a magazine review that rated Firewalls in their analysis with more points given for how well it blended in with the home office furniture than with what level of security it could provide. About the only way to really gauge the security capabilities of Firewalls today are ITSEC Assurance Level (E Levels) and Common Criteria Assurance Level Definitions (EAL Levels). Try http://www.itsec.gov.uk and go to certified products. Even then you need to be somewhat careful as some vendors only have a portion or module of the Firewall certified while others have everything certified... read the certification details.

In February 1999, Small Business/Home Office Computing
(www.smallbusiness.com) composed a "Buyer's Guide" for Internet Firewalls.
In it, they reviewed three of the four firewalls (Elron, AltaVista and
CyberGuard) you're inquiring about. Visit
http://www.smalloffice.com/expert/archive/tebuyer77.htm for their review.

In addition, LanTimes reviewed the following firewalls last year (8.17.98)
AXENT Raptor EagleNT 5.0.1
CyberGuard Firewall for Windows NT 4.1
Elron Software Firewall for NT 2.5
IBM eNetwork Firewall 3.2
MEMCO SessionWall-3 2.1
Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0
NetGuard Guardian 3.01
Network Associates Gauntlet Firewall 2.0

Visit http://www.lantimes.com/testing/98compare/pcfirewa.html for their
complete review...
