You're confusing two issues here:
1. the platform you are running on (i.e., NetWare, NT, FreeBSD
2. the Protocol you use to access that platform (IPX, IP)
In point of fact, NetWare, from an Internet security POV, is absolutely
more secure if you run in IPX mode, because "you can't get there from
here" - there is just no way you can launch a security or DOS attack
across the Internet against my IPX based network.
If you expose native NetWare 5, running in "pure" TCP/IP mode to the
internet, you are as vulnerable as any other OS would be. (Well, less
than some). NetWare's IP stack has been "hardened" against DOS based
attacks, like the "ping of death" since the late 80s.
Worth noting that BorderManager, Novell's firewall/proxy server, just
received ICSA certification.
