If i understood well, you want to know what HTTP server and version is
running in a certain host, you can get that info with this string:
HEAD / HTTP/1.0 <ENTER><ENTER>
send it to port 80 of the host you wanna query, for example Micro$oft runs:
# telnet www.microsoft.com 80
Trying 207.46.130.150...
Connected to microsoft.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
HEAD / HTTP/1.0
HTTP/1.0 403 Access Forbidden
Server: Microsoft-IIS/4.0
Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 19:00:38 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 172
Connection closed by foreign host.
Hope i could help you out,
Enrique Vadillo-

|o| Hello
|o|
|o| I was wondering if there was a string you could pass via a scanner that
|o| will query a web server as to what it is. Example, I am scanning a
|o| network for web servers and when I find one I want to know what kind it
|o| is.
|o|
|o| Thank you.
