The e-mail system was developed in the days when reliable permanent
connections were the exception rather then the rule. As a result the
e-mail system was designed for any mail server to accept mail and attempt
to deliver it to the destination. The idea being that hop by hop it would
get closer until it reached the destination. Spammers are now taking
advantage of this to use someones mail server to send tons of mail out.
(they send one message with many recipiants and the mail server doing the
relaying has to send a seperate message for each of these addresses).
"Open mail relay" indicates a mail server that is still configured to
allow this. As spammers have become such a problem it is now considered
bad to have this (plus the spammers will kill your mail server when they
find it) and current versions of mail programs (sendmail 8.9.x and others)
now deny relaying for other domains by default.
