IIOP (CORBA) can be handled by firewalls at a reasonable security level.
Simple applications based on request/response are no problem. More complex
dynamic applications with callbacks and factory objects launched at runtime
are more difficult, but until now we could handle everything.
We are using self written proxies closely interacting with the CORBA
application.

The problem of CORBA through firewalls is very simple:
Many people don't want a special proxy for IIOP, so they are looking for
dirty tricks.
IMHO HTTP tunneling of IIOP is evil.
