Which brings up the question... why run a firewall on an operating system
you don't have the source code for? As you say, all vendors drag their
feet when it's bugfix time.

This doesn't mean "free operating systems", necessarily. BSDI still ships
source licenses, though they charge a bomb for them, and DEC^WDigital^WCompaq
at least *used to* provide VMS source.
