They do indeed exist in the real world. A popular implementation
is the SQUID proxy in conjunction with a cisco ACL re-direct (hence
the "transparent" part).

The May 1999 issue of Sys Admin magazine had an article and HOW-TO on
precisely this subject. It describes a linux-based deployment of squid
with the associated cisco configurations required.
