I looked at BigIP when we were evaluating load-balancing solutions. I didn't
like it because it's basically a PC running Unix (BSD, I think) with proxies,
and we had already put a computer running proxies in front of our website with
poor results, and that was a Origin 200, quite a bit more box than the BigIP.
So I am not convinced that it scales well, and I did not think it was worth
the price. I could build something very similar but with more horsepower,
using common components and Linux, for just a couple thousand. It wouldn't
have a nice web GUI, though. :)

Our solution was the Alteon ACEdirector2, which is extremely fast, flexible,
and robust. I would not expect it to have any problems in a NAT environment.
You have a lot of flexibility in how it will route traffic. Plus, it does
packet filtering, in addition to load balancing, all at "wire speed". It's a
switch, not a PC running Unix, though of course, it has an embedded MIPS
processor running software, but with ASIC assistance. See
http://alteon-networks.com/. Truly great stuff, and it actually cost about
half what BigIP quoted us for one of their boxes.
