I am looking for a software (preferably free and able to run on FreeBSD)
that can filter mail on mail gate according to MIME types.
After the recent increase in trojans and e-mail worms it was decided
by the company's management that users are not supposed to receive
executable files in e-mail.
This is to guard against users being careless, not malicious, so I am
not supposed to care about files being encrypted or obfuscated.
Different types of executables are also not a problem, because all
desktop boxes are Windows. Compression might be an issue hear, but only
most common types of it (like zip), because users generally aren't able
to figure out how to decompress it anyway.
So what I was going to do is to get some kind of software that
will live on a mail server and do something like that:
* look at every incoming message and see if it has attachments
* if it does, see if it has MIME-type "application/octet-stream" or
"application/x-zip-compressed" or maybe something else
* if it is compressed try to decompress it
* check extension for .scr or .exe or .com or .bat
* quarantine it, send notification to sender, recipient and postmaster
I don't need virus scanning (at least right now). Performance is not
a problem as the company is rather small.
The only thing I was able to find is ISPMailGate, but it is alpha
version
and is not recommended by its authors for production use. Anyway it
looks
too complicated for this simple task.
So, the question is, is there any software that does that kind of
filtering or maybe there is some other solution for this problem?
Thanks in advance.
