I tinkered with this a few years ago, and found that I was able to
disconnect one TX wire, but not the other one.  Having just one wire,
the hub kept a link, kept sending me data, but anything I sent out
didn't go anywhere.  It might have been specific to whatever combination
of hub/network card I was using, YMMV...
