Greetings,

I have been asked by a friend with a small law office and a limited
budget to help him set up a LAN with Internet access and VPN service for
several satellite offices. DSL is available, so that takes care of the
pipe. The next question is, how should I design the network? I have
never done this kind of thing before. My experience is limited to
peer-to-peer with MS software, and I am well aware of how steep the
learning curve is, but I am up for a challenge. My friend knows next to
nothing about computers, and he really needs a solution. Telling him to
hire a consultant is not realistic, for $$$ reasons, and I'm afraid that
if I turn him down, he will just get a local yo-yo to stick an NT server
machine on the DSL and enable RAS. Then next month you'd be hearing
about how his site was the launch point of an attack against NSA or
something.

The bottom line is, how can I acquire knowledge fast? Which books,
papers, sites would you direct me to to learn the basics of a sound
network design? I've been on this list for a while, and have acquired
quite a list of sites and info regarding locking down NT, firewalls, and
other security issues, but I need the basics.

Please don't tell me that I'm crazy, because I know that already.

Thanks in advance for your help and understanding.
