I hope I can get the benefit of indulging some of you firewall mavens in
assessing a future trend in firewall solutions.

Several analyst firms are predicting that internal firewalling will be the
next big thing in firewalls (Meta Group, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, E&Y)

In his very perceptive article in Network Computing on December, 1998
(http://www.networkcomputing.com/922/922colwalsh.html)
Brian Walsh writes:
1. "E-commerce just happens to be the first application to demand the same
degree of security behind the firewall as is traditionally applied to the
DMZ"
2. ". The reality is that security is hopelessly lacking on internal
segments behind the firewall"
3. "Essentially, the problem is that the e-commerce initiative everyone in
IT is so jazzed about will touch practically every application and database
in your shop. Gone is the luxury of defending only a single segment. That
innocent Web server will start opening sessions to servers on all of your
production segments."
4. ", e-commerce is probably the first application that really puts pressure
on your internal security. "
5."Experience has shown that evaluating security behind the firewall and
implementing required solutions is a project in its own right, and is of the
same order of magnitude as the e-commerce implementation itself."

Do any of you gurus on this thread share the conclusion in 5? How do you go
about specifying and deploying internal firewalls? are internal firewalls
being deployed?

The answers will help us develop better products and help us provide better
solutions to our customers.
