comments like "READ THE BOOK".... boy, i know how
it feels
when you need good advise and someone tells you,
read the
book.

sushant ,start like this.

since you say that you are doing a project on
Firewall as
part of your college studies. first define, what do
you
want actually do. Just build a firewall from tools
and
software available. or since you say you are a
computer
science student, why don't you write a module. what
module ?

Ok this is what i did for my thesis. but I was not
a computer
science major, so i did the construction of
firewall from
TIS tool kit on linux 1.2.3. this was about 3 years
ago. pretty
old... correct... in the time since then, lot of
products have
come up in the market, but the base concepts have
remained the
same.
In my opinion it would not suit a comp science guy
to just
compile a binaries and show up as a project. you
will lose
out when it comes to grading. college grades are
different
from work in office. i hope you know the
difference.

so write some modules, like eg packet filtering for
a say a
bad packets etc. (just an example.. learn about the
security holes in todays
IP/TCP envoronmemt. learn about IP and TCP
throughly.
Understand the concept of security policy.
understand that
firewalls implement or help in implementing
security policy for
an organisation.
To be blunt, if i were you, i would concentrate on
how to write
modules/programs against known attacks on networks.
do a
search on some hacking tools. see how they expoited
the weakness
in OS platforms. it would be enriching effort.
Buidling a TIS tool kit is nothing but tweaking
configuration
files and compiling a few binaries.that's it... For
a Comp scince
guy a lot more is expected. I am saying this to you
because I
learnt the hard way. and I was told all this even
though
mine was a MIS project.
I am sure you would get more advise from others in
this list. This
list has a mature audience and majority have good
expereince in
firewall configuration issues etc.

feel free to write to me off the list.
