As you mentioned quite a few DoS Attacks can be defended by Firewalls
(especially in the case of a firewall behind a link which can be easyly
flooded for example with smurf attack). But a much bigger attack against
firewalls are social engeneering, or eve the fact that your firewall is too
restrictive, in that case you have to calculate with users tryng to
circumvent the firewall security (for example doing their own internet dial
ups from the office modems).

Most firewalls fail in restricting outgoing informations as effectifely as
it is needed to prevent trojan attacks.
