I use curl to fetch a URL from a high visibility high volume site, I time
how long it takes to get the file and the size of the file, and get the
throughput for an individual connection. Then I pass that into mrtg to
generate throughput graphs. I use that combined with another instance of
mrtg to plot the raw i/o on the routers. In this way I can not only say
that the leased line is pegged, but throughput is dropping to less than 10%
of its nominal rate. I also do another curl to the firewall and then
bounced to an internal site to be able to subtract out the effect of the WAN
and the firewall.
