Yikes, I got some 20 answers, ALL of them good and helpful. I know
there was recently some "unpleasantness" here on the list, but this
was an example of the list at its best. A big thanks to all.
FWIW, the Cisco local tech said to take portfast off all my ports on all
switches not connected to another server. This appears to have
made a big difference. Once I used the ISP's graphical webpage that
displays T1 bandwidth usage over time and did a plot for a year, I
saw that things ramped up as we had phased in the Cisco 2900XL
switches at the user layer....that's what made me suspect the Cisco
gear. Apparently it can generate spurious traffic. Making the
change is laborious...has to be added to every port on every 2900XL
switch, one by one.
Again THANKS!
Much in your responses to think about for the mid and long term!
Right now I'm running flat out to make the HW/SW upgrades
needed before years end.
