I'd be pretty surprised if Solaris on a U10 had the same multiple-NIC
latency problems that Linux has, let alone the performance of a 2.0.x
kernel, but I haven't benched it, so I suppose it's possible.
When we recenly changed out some hardware (with a better bus than PCI and
an OS with better NIC handling than Linux 2.0.x) for new Sparc Ultra-2's
with sbus NICs, the overall change in latency (note- latency, not
bandwidth) was significantly noticable. Enough so that you could tell the
difference at 4am on January 1st with a handful of people on each box
with both running at 99.99% idle. The only thing that sucked was having
to be there on New Years.
YMMV,
Paul
