BlackIce Defender sort of works on Windows 2000. It will alert you about
things going on. Its firewall features don't work in Windows 2000 yet,
though; the promised new version is supposed to fix this.

Another personal firewall that's getting some press is ZoneAlarm from Zone
Labs. They've just released version 2.0. It does work properly on Windows
2000.

Have you seen Steve Gibson's ShieldsUp? It's become quite the rage lately.
On his web site (http://grc.com) he's got a link that will probe your PC for
vulnerabilities. Surprisingly thorough, it's an excellent way to test how
well your newly-installed personal firewall is working. But the accompanying
text describing what's going on can get a litte, well, annoying at times.
I've always had high respect for Gibson; the ShieldsUp site's wording can be
a bit frightening if you're unaware of what the site is probing for.

Subject: Personal firewall/IDS for Win2K

Anyone know of a good personal firewall/IDS that will work with Win2K? The
older (non-Norton) version of AtGuard doesn't work with it. The newer one
says it doesn't work under NT at all (I hate Norton/Symantec). BlackIce says
they don't work under Win2K but they will have one soon that will. I never
trust 'real soon now' statements.

I know I'm getting scanned at home because I have AtGuard running on a
Windows 98 box on the same segment and I'm seeing scans there. Nothing
serious yet but I know they are coming and I'd like to be as protected as I
can be.

I had thought of using my mail/web server (minimal traffic on my personal
domain) as a firewall box but I've become rather taken with the
functionality and reporting of the personal firewalls (specifically
AtGuard).

Any thoughts would be most welcome.
