I have received the solution to this from NAI support in the UK. Apparently Gauntlet is very particular about which NT service pack it is on. The advice given was that Gauntlet 5.0 should use SP4 and Gauntlet 5.5 should use SP5. I was originally using SP6 with Gauntlet 5.5. This has cured the problem.
