Try this:
telnet IP address port number
helo
mail from:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
rcpt to:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
data
Subject: test message
This is a test.
.
quit
Note the <CR> after subject and the period on a line by itself.
