Port Scanner

We are contemplating to scan our firewalls, FW-1 for NT, on a regular basis
to find out and alert us what ports are opened.  We plan to scan on both
interfaces of a firewall.

Is it a good idea?  What tool(s) are available?

Any pointers are appreciated.
