Many thanks to everyone who has responded to my query.

However, judging by some of the replies I have received, I believe
I was rather vague in my original post (below).

As I said we are running Solaris on a Sun Sparc, but we do not intend
to place the firewall on this machine as I may have led you to believe.

This machine will be upgraded to the latest version of Solaris at some stage.

The machine is situated in a webfarm which has a 10 baseT ethernet 45-65Mb 
connection (I think). We are hoping to add an additional dedicated box.
This machine will most likely run Linux, although it does not have to.
However, we are not adverse to a hardware solution of some sort ie. router.

We will be allowing web access obviously and restricted telnet access by IP
among others.

As you have no doubt gathered I am no firewall expert and I will be working
with others in setting this up.
