I completely agree. I am terribly disappointed with 3Com since the advent
of the 905x series. Even loading the proper drivers between different
variants of 905b and 905c cards can be a hassle. Not only are there 905x
drivers for the 905 series, but depending on your model of 905x card, you
may need to use 900 series drivers. Its completely ludicrous.

I USED to be a completely loyal 3Com customer.

Since my 3C905x/Catalyst 5000 fiasco (2) years ago, I have chosen Intel
10/100 NIC's for all my servers. They have worked flawlessly in any
environment I has used them so far (3Com switched or Cisco switched).

I would also add to my rant, NOT to use 3Com PCMCIA NIC's either. My driver
experiences for those have been terrible as well. After much head shaking,
I have since standardized with Xircom RealPort NIC's - no problems and no
dongles to break!

| I've had what seems to be hardware-related problems with 3c905C
| after 3com switched from Lucent chips to Broadcom chips. I've seen
| oddball stuff like bit flipping errors occuring only on certain
| data strings. I don't know if this is a receiver or transmitter
| problem though.
|
| FYI: If bit flipping occurs on the same data string all the time,
| the result will for instance be that you can never download
| certain files no matter what server you download them from.
| I know from experience :-(

| I'm very disappointed to see that 3com are having these problems.
| I've always associated 3com with fairly high standard, but after
| all the problems with the 905 series - the 905A that just plain
| sucked, problems with speed negotiation in a lot of models, the
| recent crap chipsets - I just don't know any more.
|
| Positive high volume experiences with other products in
| multiple environments over a long period of time is welcome :-P
