Alan, "Secure Shell" is based on material from Tatu Ylonen, with
standards being developed by the IETF. There appear to be a fair
number of variants of SSH. You can find out more from www.ssh.org
or ssh.com, but basically, SSH encrypts all traffic for
internet-based remote logins and file transfers. It also supports
secure email access and X11 tunneling. You can find more
information -- and a lot of sales rhetoric -- at the URLs cited.
