This may be off topic, so please forgive me...

My company is upgrading it's database server. Instead of the five offices
running their own database, we're going to operate a central database out of
the main office. We are planning to put in a VPN. We evaluated and settled
upon WatchGaurd Firebox II as combo firewall/VPN solution for all of our
offices. Our offices have/will have DSL connections.

The company we're dealing with for the software (MS SQL Server) is trying to
angle in on the VPN stuff. They're network guy suggested running a Netscreen
box to handle the firewall of the main office and the VPN (I assume the
other offices would have VPN client software). The network guy also said we
should run Win2K Terminal Server to link our offices. It sounded like
Microsoft's version dumb terminals. According to him, this combo of VPN and
Win2K Terminal Server would eliminate the need for firewalls at our
satellite offices, since "they wouldn't have any data".

When I heard the above, alarms went off in my head. I think that the other
offices will be vulnerable, if we did this. Am I correct in this assumption?
Is this a common solution? Or is this the future? What's the list's opinion
of this type of architecture?

Thanks,
