Well, to be specific, it is the area (or network) of boxes which is
partially protected by the firewall.  The firewall is supposed to shield
your internal systems completely, and partially protect the systems that
need to be exposed to the outside world.  The systems that must be exposed
to the outside world are housed in your DMZ.  They are LESS protected from
external intrusion than your internal LAN.  You should not trust the
systems in the DMZ as they are more exposed to the outside world.

The original, military concept of the DMZ, is that it was the strip of land
between the front lines of two opposing armies.  No one controls the DMZ
and anything moving in the DMZ cannot be trusted.
