Sheesh! one hastily posted suggestion is all it takes to really get yourself put in
check!
You are right for the most part, however every hop (hub OR repeater) DOES reduce the
size of the packet (hence the "Runt" errors)..why do you think theyre called "runt"
packets?? cuz theyre too small..
You are correct about the routing loop being the problem however..
I only saw the "Too Many Hops" part of the original post, hence the hasty post (I'll
try to read more of the message in the future *smile*)
Hope this helps you out..
cheers..

Hello Marc,
I have read your reply to firewall mailling list and I beg to differ
with your opinion.
I believed if you cascade too many hub together, you will only see
'runt error' due to delay cause by hub everytime it pass packet to
another hub. And I believed a hub is just like a repeater which just
propagate any packet without doing anything on the packet.
The problem experience by Syed might be due to its routing loop or might
be due to other error which is premature for us to determine with the
information given.
I hope thats help you out.

You can't have more than 4 hops (hubs) between your workstation and your firewall.
What you can do is replace 1 or more hubs with switches. The reason is that every hub
your packets go through strips off a bit from the header, and after 4 there isnt
enough left to make the entire trip. (in a nutshell, anyway). Switches do not strip
this Bit from the header and thus don't limit you to the 3-4-3 rule.
Or, your Firewall or mail server may be hozed..but thats another issue entirely.
cheers..

Hi,
I am trying to send mail through firewall but getting following message:
<<returned mail: too many hops 18(17 max): from <> SIZE=5889 via localhost,
to firewall.
the number of these messages are increasing every day. Does any one have any
clue about this error message. I am not very strong in routers and will
appreciate any input on this error.
thanks
syed
