IPchains? I always thought IPchains is the firewall kernel module for Linux
kernels 2.0 to 2.3 (will be mad obsolete by netfilter/iptables). I guess you're
talking of IPfilter (which is roughly equivalent to netfilter).
While IPchains only is a static packet filter (as are standard Cisco ACLs),
netfilter(Linux) and IPfilter(*BSD) are stateful ("dynamic") packet filters -

overview over the different filter&firewall methods.
