I'm not 100% clear in my mind about how such building blocks would
be used to assemble a real SSL proxy like we're discussing here, but
your mention of lynx leads me to want to mention a couple of other
tools.
Stunnel[1] is a truly groovy building block for assembling SSL-based
solutions, it can SSL-enable many clients and servers with no mods
needed. Recent versions can do the "Transparent proxy" dance on
platforms that support tproxies.
The other favourite of mine is curl[2], a cmd-line http and ftp
proxy that can do https. It can also do a zillion other things
allowing fairly elaborate scripting of web client interactions,
including e.g. cookies and forms.
