Remote node VPNs are *not* a security feature. By definition they break
the encryption boundary, and your requirements specificly include
insecure nodes.
Who owns the box, the configuration, management, who has access and a
host of other things make VPNs dicey if you do a complete security
analysis. "Personal Firewalls" only touch on a few of the issues.
The first anti-personal firewall worm or virus is going to open up a *lot*
of networks.
