You're going to hear this from _many_ people I fear, but
here goes:
There _is_ _no_ "best" firewall. It all depends on
what you need it to do, and what security trade offs
you are willing to accept to achieve some level
of functionality.
So, you're going to have to specify what you want
the firewall to do a little bit better than
"what's the best one" in order to get an answer.
And, if some vendor claims "we have the best one,
look at our study" they're plain lying. See above.
I know there are trade rags that publish comparative
tests/evals etc and rank different firewalls. The problem
is _still_ that they are testing them to some sort of
criteria of "wanted behaviour" that they suppose is
valid for "most" organisations, usually meaning low security,
high functionality, ease of use. Although this may work in
some cases (if your requirements match the criteria used in
the test), it's still not a definate answer to the question
"what is the best firewall".
... and let's not forget - all firewalls are pretty much
useless unless the "protected" hosts are sufficiently
hardened, so forget all you've heard about "plug and play"
security - it's an illusion.
