I attended the San Jose sessions, and passed both firewall and
NT level II certs. The firewall classes (which I LOVED!!! - thanks to
Chris Brenton and his colleague's very exciting tutorials!) were
worth it; unfortunately, because of time overlap, I couldn't take the
intrusion path, so I had to content myself with the NT one. For the
NT, though, I would advise you to wait 'til it matures ... those that
taught the class didn't even read one article from Phrack (e.g. vol9,
issue 55 - which is a must), or haven't heard of HP's Stefan
Norberg's "Building a Windows NT bastion host in practice", which
are some of the first things one need to learn (in my humble
opinion). If you just want to pass the NT, there is no need to read
almost anything, and one still gets the chance to do pass it (having
had some work experience with M$ product, that is) - it was very
basic. I've heard, though, about the intrusion path being very good
... can't tell from personal experience :-(

Certification value? I can tell you this much - I spoke with a
couple of peers of mine (managers of networking groups), looking
for security personnel - most of them haven't even heard of
SANS/GIAC, which tells me how unprepared those who need such
people, are. I took the exams out of personal "curiosity", myself
(as I am not looking for security jobs ... I am actually looking to
hire somebody for my group), but I had to define such a job for my
HR rep, to look in the market for somebody, and I think I am one of
the few who made SANS/GIAC certification a plus in considering
candidates :-)

        HTH,
        Stef

P.S. read the papers from the GIAC's site - it will give you an idea
of what's required/expected from a candidate.
