Queer...
Pronunciation: 'kwir'
Function: adjective
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1508 AD
Definition: a : differing in some odd way from what is usual or normal b (1):
ECCENTRIC,
UNCONVENTIONAL; synonym see STRANGE - queerish /-ish/ adjective - queerly adverb -
queerness noun
Folks who speak *proper* English (as many from the UK and India do) often use "queer"
to convey the
quality of something which does not operate in an expected fashion, e.g., access rules
breaking
Netmeeting. If Vijay had meant something else, he'd have written "faggot" or "fag" or
"homosexual" or
"gay" or "flamer" or some other term, but likely not "queer". It is only in
venrnacular common to
certain metropolitan areas of the United States (partcularly NY, SF, LA, Atlanta,
Miami, Fire Island,
and such) where "queer", as a slang term, survives (from its earlier and originally
negative use
prevalent in the 50s, 60s, and 70s), and is often used in a positive or political
light by "queers"
themselves, who are often activists (e.g. "Queer" Nation). On this, therefore, being
in America (where,
by virtue of the First Amendment, articulation tribunals do not yet exist), that I
find your objection
in this instance *decidedly* queer.
