Simon,
Port 2301 is the Compaq Management Agent. It is installed by default on
all Compaq machines and allows for asset management, viewing system
and bus load on the machine, remote control etc. It pretty much has a
subset of SNMP functionality, but with a nice web interface (try
http://thebox:2301/).
It also happens to run as System and sports vulnerabilities:
