I've not worked with the PIX before, so I'm not sure
if what you're suggesting would work or not.

It sounds like you're looking for a "stealthy" firewall
that subdivides a single subnet (which can be dropped
transparently in place).  I know of three vendors
that make these: NetScreen's product line, Lucent's Managed Firewall,
and Sun's SunScreen 3.1 (installed in Stealth mode).
