On 4.2(5) you could use IOS style comments in a config you edited
offline, and then upload the config to the PIX via tftp. You can't
view the comments on the PIX - a sho config does not show comments.
In fact, I don't even think the comments are retained by the PIX.
I wrote up a procedure for configuring PIXs - edit the file offline,
rcs for version control, grab a PIX console, clear config secondary,
and upload the new config via tftp. If the config was OK, you could
check in the new config, make a nicely formatted copy of the commented
config on paper, and stick it in a binder. The ability to put
comments in the config was a big plus. In fact, before I could upload
configs via tftp I use to curse those damned things every time I had
to modify a config (which was too often). It got to the point where I
was eyeing an old 486 and a pile of old ISA ethernet cards.
I tried this on recently on a newer release of the PIX software and
got errors - haven't looked into it yet.
Question (rhetorical, but if anyone cares to answer) - do the people
that develop for the PIX ever try maintaining them in production
networks?
