Information on hacking attempts

Is there a repository of information regarding types of hacking attacks,
what they attempt to do and how to stop them.

We've recently been targeted but our firewall intervened ( I hope) and
reported possible ports scans, Back Orifice and NetBus attacks. It would be
nice to know what these might have done !
