Hello everyone. I subscribed to this list a week ago and have been watching
to see what level of knowledge you all expect readers to have. I'm way below
the norm, so I hope I can ask some newbie questions.

My company (a bunch of software developers) has setup a network of about 12
PC's running WinNT/2K. They are using a peer-to-peer network model. We
currently have a 3Com Officeconnect LAN Modem (ISDN) connecting us to the
internet. We have a pool of 30 static IP addresses. It looks like this:

                        __________ _____________
____
                       | LAN MDM | | 16port Switch |
___/ \___
                       | |-----------------|
|-----------------------| Private Net |
Internet------------|__________| |_____________|
\-------------------/

I have the perfect machine to use as a Linux based ipchains firewall. I
think that I want to put it between the LAN Modem and the switch.

Would I use IP forwarding on the firewall? Does this mean that the firewall
would also be the gateway that the clients refer to? I've read the IPCHAINS
HOWTO and the NET HOWTO, but I guess I still don't completely understand how
the clients will be able to comunicate to PC's on the internet. For now, I
don't even care about firewalling (ACCEPT all), I just wonder how you would
put this Linux box in place to be a firewall.

Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. If this is too
novice a question, could you please point me in the right direction.

Adam
