#Actually an SMTP server sends packets full of data whereas Telnet
#sends one character in each data packet.  This an easily detectable
#difference.  Raptor generates a log entry when it detects this type
#of activity.  I agree with you on the rejecting SMTP connection
#because they are Telnet connections.  Seems pointless.

This used to be be true but for a while now telnet has a line at a time
mode.  The mode used is negotiated at the start of the connection.

Half-Duplex - The original mode. Requires the GO Ahead command from the
server before accepting user input and is character at a time (I believe).

Character at a time - This came after  half-duplex and is the type of
connection you are talking about.  Each character is sent in it's own
packet.

Line at a time -  This was the first implementation of line at a time.

Linemode - True line at a time,  The specifications are in RFC1184.
