Outdated links suck that's true and the 'FTP style' (HTTP directory indexes)
listings ARE indeed just a tad cryptic for the newbie (but no more cryptic
than FTP itself) but, with the exception of Charles' self-extracting
EigerStein image, LRP isn't really aimed at Linux Newbies. The reason I say
this (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is because in *most* cases you
need a functioning Linux box to build the LRP image anyway. Deciphering what
you need on the other hand is largely personal anyway and Charles does go
out of his way to try to explain what you might need if you are indeed a
Linux, but more to the point an LRP, newbie. Linux, indeed the entire Open
Source community, is all about investigation and learning and doing for
yourself (that was an opinion), there just happens to be a wealth of
information and an incredible support group available for those (and this is
NOT directed at you John) unwilling to actually do the research.

Again, Linux is all about learning for yourself what's good (for you) and
what's not, what works and what doesn't. If you think you have the right
version and you install it and there's no IDE support (or whatever
particular option you're looking for) try again. I don't understand the
relevance of the gz or tar being compatible with WinZip but now you know, so
post it somewhere so that other people don't have to figure it out for
themselves.

Do some research and write the paragraph, that would be a nice touch.
Everyone in the Linux community had to start somewhere right?! Please don't
take that comment the wrong way, I agree it would be nice to see that done
and maybe I'LL do it someday, but Linux is NOT about handholding and
walkthroughs, it's about figuring out what you do and don't like and fixing
it, not complaining about it.

Yes, this is only possible because of various individuals donated time so
lets all thank them right now. Rick, Charles, Matthew, Ray, Mike, Jack (in
no particular order and anyone left off is just because of MY ignorance) YOU
GUYS ALL KICK ASS and I appreciate everything that you've done for the Open
Source/Linux community in general and LRP specifically. I hope that in the
near future I can be an additional source of (solid) information to help
alleviate some of the time and effort that all of you have put into this
project. (Although I know you love it)

Just going out on a limb here but I would guess that around 75% of the
questions asked (and answered) weekly on this list can be found in the
archives. BTW, there's no such thing as a stupid question (well maybe...)
but there is a lack of personal research.

They are valid views John and thank you for sharing. I hope that you find
mine as valid as your own. BTW, none of this is meant to be a personal
attack on you or your views so please no flames.
Anyhoo, that's my take. Replies wanted. Flames OK if you really think I'm
wrong.
Greg
lets be careful out there
