Test your systems yourself...If you have an extra PC sitting around, it
wouldn't take much horsepower. I would recommend one of the many scanning
tools out there to check out your PC. Superscan 2.06 is an excellent port
scanner. See http://members.home.com/rkeir/software.html
If you can build a FreeBSD box (http://www.freebsd.org ), I would recommend
trying Nessus Security scanner. It will actually run under several flavors
of Unix. See http://www.nessus.org for details.
On my NT box, I always run netstat -na to see what ports my box is
listening on.
You can then network your PC with the second PC, then run the scanners.
Simulating your connection over an ethernet link should show the same
vulnerability.

Next questions then, if someone would be so good:
Are the net security services worth trying as a 'semi-serious' means to
establish PC security holes?
Are there any good, reliable & 'safe' sites that anyone can recommend for
auto scanning of my PC firewall config?
I tried and failed to queue for hours for a security scan at
http://www.secure-me.net/ any faster alternatives please?
Many thanks!
