if you don't set up the reverses, you'll be unable to _send_ mail to some 
servers.
some admins chose to reject smtp connections that are not resolved.

In other words, if you connect from an address 1.2.3.4, the server will do 
a reverse lookup
to get the hostname. if no answer is found, the connection is closed.

Also, if your MTA advertises itself as foo.domain.name, you'd better make 
this name
a resolvable one. some servers close the connection if the MTA uses a 
non-resolvable
name for itself.

yes, it sucks, but that's SMTP: it choosed to marry DNS since a long time, and
they've not divorced yet :)
