Curmudgeonly young network engineers (not that I know any of those) are
quick to anger. Among the things that irritate them are lack of caffeine and
off-topic posts. The whole point of your class exercise is so that you can
learn things instead of just firing off a post to a bunch of annoyed
security people.
Please don't do this again. However, here is the knowledge you seek:
I think they're probably trying to teach you about network classes. Network
classes don't actually matter any more, which is probably why all of the
real world people here gave you such "interesting" answers. However, purely
for book larnin' purposes, you check the most significant bits of the host
address. If they are:
0 - "Class A" - Mask is 255.0.0.0
10 - "Class B" Mask is 255.255.0.0
etc. Go find more info. Start with a websearch.
