On a switch you will have to use some kind of "port
copy " or "port monitoring". The ports on a switch only receive traffic for the
mac address that is bound to that port. By copying the traffic from the desired
portion of the network to the port with the Sniffer connected, the traffic can
be captured and analyzed as desired. Again, this depends on the switch that you
are using and the type of NIC you are using for the Sniffer. Some NICs cannot be
put into "promiscuous" mode where they can copy traffic off of the segment that
is not intended for the monitoring station.
