Your point is well taken and is the reason that I am bothered by some of the
security sites' marketing. It seems they are telling the great unwashed
that they are "as safe as a bug in a rug". This simply is NOT true.
Instances of this are why some people think that a lot of security people
are unprincipled (greedy?) and hence the appropriated Al Capp quote a while
back. This does not fall under the category of "scam" (any more than most
marketing) but it does speak to the issue of higher authority. Similar to
the abuse of power by police authority or governments. IOW They have a
HIGHER obligation to protect. The Internet has literally hundreds of sights
devoted to frauds & scams, but I submit not ONE of them is watching for
security fraud. Other than occasionally in this group (and perhaps a few
others) NOBODY is watching the watchers.

*The current commercially available personal firewalls are:
*
*McAfee Firewall http://www.macafee.com/
*PGP7 Firewall http://www.pgp.com/products/dtop-security/default.asp
*Network ICE BlackICE http://www.networkice.com
*ZoneAlarm Pro www.zonelab.com
*Symantec Personal Firewall
*CA eSafe
*Sygate
*Biodata's Sphinxwall Firewall http://www.sphinxwall.com/ V1.0 build 599
*
*
*Personal firewalls are useful and should be considered by any user who
*directly connects to hostile networks, such as the Internet. They have a
*role to play in both the corporate and SOHO (Small Office/Home Office)
*markets. However, since this market segment is relatively new 1997 until
*present, many products are still immature, some have matured due to the
*number of users providing feedback and being responsive to the enlarging
*customer base.
*
*The reporting feature that translates packets and evidence logs into
*meaningful information to the end user definitely needs some improvement,
*although some add on products are available, they to are still in their
*infancy..
