Videocam Capture in Linux

Id like to ask if theres someone who have tried to configure a video cam to 
work in linux to capture an image and saves it in jpeg, gif or whatever 
format it is. the video cam is sony and the linux machine is slak/redhat. 
pls help if you have an idea..
