maximum no of nic per os

i know this sound silly or already been posted.. but would like to know
if someone here knows or can direct me to a site that will tell me "the
maximum number of network interface card an os can handle" for mulitple
networks and firewall setup. i tested up to 4 in a win nt 4 but thats
how far i could go coz limited hardware resources. thank you!
