There is a simple yet effective script for backup and (bare-bone)
re-install of a static Sun system (e.g. firewall) at
http://www.wyae.de/software/

Major advantage over a dd is that it only copies the used space
(without compression - safer with respect to tape errors). Plus you can
restore single partitions if needed. Bare-bone recovery (nuked blank
harddisc) including boot from CD-ROM, complete tape restore and reboot
is usually less than 15 minutes. No additional software needed except
the standard Solaris boot-CD you get with your system.

Bye
    Volker
