<selfish grin> After the first of many trojans, worms and other viruses
made the rounds, I changed my policy regarding e-mail. Now I no longer
read e-mail (at least until it is validated as coming from "trusted"
sources) in Linux Pine with some fundamental changes. I use Microsoft's
vulnerable e-mail products sparingly, if at all. As a result, when the
message of which you are speaking arrived, I opened it in Linux and
checked to see what it was, hoping that it was merely a clone, rather
than a new permutation of the Anna Karnikova virus that was about to
sweep around the world with more destructive tendencies than its parent.
Thank goodness, it wasn't, according to the checksum I've got.

Then I deleted the message and went on about my business. I simply don't
let Outlook or Outlook Express near the internet, and I have learned a
lot from lurking here about how to harden my mail server.

It's pretty depressing when I do, but occasionally. 8-)

Actually, even having a little Perl script that somehow would scan for
familiar names (such as the Karnikova virus) or subject lines might
help, and it wouldn't require a lot of system resources. On the other
hand, the users should be held responsible for their system security,
shouldn't they? My job, as a system admin, is to beat them bodily about
the head for not using anti-virus software, not to bog down the server
with yet another layer of "protection", no?

However, I *DO* wonder how many on the list opened this puppy up.
Actually, I wonder how many, after the fact, would *ADMIT* it. <wry grin>
