Lets say you your neighbor is envious at you for having a job.
DOS (Denial of Service): He puts glue in the locks of your car so that no
key fits or punches your tyres.
Brute force: He tries all possible key combinations on the door lock and
the starter (trying to steal and sell your car).
Packet Sniffing: He opens your mail box and reads your mail (to find out
with whom you have regular correspondence or to steal the chocolate from
your Christmas Parcel).
IP Spoofing: He sends you a letter pretending to be someone you trust (and
asks for a money transfer to a specified account).
For a more detailed description I recommend: Stephen Northcutt: Network
Intrusion Detection, An Analyst's Handbook or for the total newbie: Bruce
Schneier: Secrets and Lies, Digital Security in a Networked World.
And numerous other sources.
